MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte — The Maasin City Sports Council has issued a strong response to a reported incident involving the alleged physical assault of a referee during the basketball competition of the Maasin City Meet.
In an official statement released on September 12, 2026, the Council said it takes the matter seriously. “While we recognize that emotions can run high during competition, violence against game officials has no place in sports,” the statement read. As Chairman, the Council’s leader affirmed the body’s commitment to discipline, respect, sportsmanship, and fair play.
Consistent with due process, the concerned coach has been placed under immediate preventive suspension from all City Sports Council-sanctioned events pending a full investigation. A Show Cause Order will also be issued to give the coach the opportunity to explain his side.
The Council stated that following a formal investigation and hearing, it will impose the appropriate sanction if the allegation is substantiated. Possible penalties include a five-year ban from City Sports Council-sanctioned events, depending on the findings and applicable rules.
The statement closed by reiterating the Council’s commitment “to maintaining a safe, fair, and respectful sporting environment for all.”
